Why Food Insecurity is Rising in Haiti
Haiti is currently grappling with one of the most severe food crises in the Western Hemisphere.
Nearly half the population — around 4.9 million people — are currently facing acute food insecurity. Of these, 1.8 million are in an emergency phase, the highest number recorded since the 2010 earthquake. What is driving this unprecedented hunger?
The Three Pillars of the Crisis
- Economic Collapse: Inflation has consistently been above 30%, making even locally grown staples unaffordable for the average family.
- Security Crisis: Armed gangs control major transport routes, blocking agricultural products from the Artibonite region from reaching urban markets.
- Climate Events: Successive years of drought followed by flash flooding have decimated small-scale subsistence farming.
In Gonaïves, we see first-hand how these macro-events affect children. Malnutrition rates are climbing, and families are being forced to skip meals for days at a time. ORDEPROGRESIA's food packages provide the literal difference between life and death during these peak hunger months.
